You have started the TIE Renewal paperwork and you are familiar with the timeline, but now you are wondering how to get back into Spain if you choose to travel or go home for the summer or even for the Holiday season. Check out below how to LEGALLY travel outside of of Spain and to ensure your rights of returning to Spain. If you are traveling outside of Spain while your TIE is expired and in the renewal process, you must apply for an Autorización de regreso in order to ensure your rights legally for returning. You may have read somewhere, ¨Well they never asked for my Regreso when I returned, so you do not need it.¨ As a foreigner you are to be aware of laws regarding your legal rights and this law is placed to ensure your legal status for returning to Spain as your documents are in process. Failure to do so limits your rights for returning to Spain and the status of your TIE Renewal. The Autorización de regreso allows you to re-enter Spain while your documents are being processed for the TIE Renewal. If you are asked for this document upon arrival to Spain after being gone and you do not have it, you could be denied re-entry and be forced to return to the United States or your home country. The Regreso acts as your short-term legal document that states you are renewing your TIE and it is valid for 90 days from the date that it is issued. Upon returning to Spain during your time at the Immigration Portal you will present them with your Passport and old TIE. Have your Autorización de regreso on hand but do not hand it over unless it is asked for. If they ask for it they may stamp or take your Regreso. One Regreso is Valid for multiple trips in and out of Spain for the 90 days that it is issued, the moment that it becomes invalid is when they stamp or take the document. If you are planning on leaving and returning to Spain while your TIE is in the Renewal Process you will HAVE TO get a new Autorización de regreso. Here are the steps on how to obtain a Regreso:
**In prior years Regresos were obtained if you had a trip planned but were unable to do solicit an appointment for a Regreso prior to your departure date. That is no longer an option; so do not rely on outdated information that you may have seen on the internet or Facebook Groups. Other posts may state that it is possible to go to other offices located in Alcala de Henares or other surrounding small communities without appointments. These options are subject to change as they saw a high increase of foreigners using these services this past summer without an appointment. Necessary Documents for Regreso The following documents are required for your Regreso Appointment
You will be granted your Regreso on the spot at the office in Aluche. Upon entering you will make your way through security and into the main building. You will present your appointment printout to the doorman and will make your way to the top level using the staircase to your right. There you will make your way to the left line and will wait to be seen by the funcionario. Check your information is correct on your form and you will be on your way.

Thanks for the info! If my regreso expires after the 90 day period and I'm unable to return to spain, can I extend the regreso from a spanish consulate in my country?

I am honestly not sure about this option. If you are out of Spain 90 days after the expiration of your card and you are not back within the 90 days of your Regreso you may have to apply for a new visa.

Thank you for explaining so clearly! If I have booked my flights in the 90 day period but I have an appointment at the extranjería 3 months before my return to Spain, will the regreso be valid from the day of my appointment or can I ask for it to start on the day of my flight out of Spain?

Your Regreso will be valid from the day of your appointment. I have heard some people having luck stating that they wanted the Regreso to be valid from a specific date but It was reasonable of within a week.

This year with COVID it is hard to say what is valid and what is not. You should still try to solicit a Regreso. Without having the Regreso and a valid card you may run into issues upon reentering Spain. If worse comes to worse try to provide documents like Padron, housing contract, and any work contract that you have.

Thank you so much for your clear explanation! If I have a valid TIE, do I still need a regreso to leave Spain for 2 weeks? I seem to be getting mixed messages from some people.
